We need to talk about…physical safety

The second of three modules on safety focused on First Aid in a circus context

Ell Circo D’ell Fuego wants to help build a safe circus community! We want to make sure that everyone who comes in to train with us can do so in a safe manner. And we want to give other players within the circus industry the opportunity to do the same. Therefore, we are developing a three-part training course on safety, in collaboration with Circuscentrum.

The training modules zoom in on technical, physical and psychosocial safety. After an initial four-day rigging course over the summer, October was devoted to First Aid for Circus Accidents.

During this training module, participants from several Flemish circusschools met every Monday in October in our training room in SPRK. The two main themes covered were:

“Circus activities can be quite risky. But in itself, if you compare it to other sports, I think sometimes we just have fewer injuries because we are very conscious about safety.”

Inne Verheyen, Trainer Préparation Physique and member of the ECDF SAFE TEAM.

The physical safety course was co-constructed in close cooperation with the people of The Flemish Cross. We coupled their knowledge with the specific knowledge that exists in a circus context in order to provide quality training tailored to our needs.

The third and final module to be organized is a course on psychosocial safety.
